Story of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

Many years ago there was a bright sage named Mrikanda. After being childless for many years, he got a son Ratna from a yagya. However, astrologers told his age as only 12 years. Sage Mrikand named that son Markandya.

When Markandeya’s childhood passed and he became a little wiser, his father sage Mrikand told him about the age of 12 and gave him the seed mantra of Lord Shiva. Sage Markandeya then composed the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and started chanting this mantra for long life. It is said that when the time of Markandya’s death came, he started crying holding the Shivling, then Lord Shiva came and saved his life and gave him the boon of immortality.
