Top 10 Things To Do in Hong Kong: Hong Kong is a city full of culture and craziness. It is amazing that they can fit so many sights, sounds and smells into one of the most densely populated areas in the world. But there is no denying that Hong Kong is a fantastic place to visit and really has something for everyone just like Singapore, one of its many neighboring cities in Southeast Asia. And because both cities are so similar, many travelers don’t mind the 3.5 hour journey from Singapore to Hong Kong.
Top 10 things to do in Hong Kong
However, to make the most of your time on your travel adventure, you want to know the top 10 things to do in Hong Kong.
Peak Tram to Victoria Peak.
The fun starts when you board the Peak Tram, it’s a 120-year-old funicular railway and at times it feels like you are on such a steep angle you could topple over at any moment. Once reaching the top you will be rewarded with the most fantastic view in Hong Kong.
You could spend hours up here taking in the panoramic views of the city.
Order Fried Rice from a street vendor.
I definitely ate my way through Hong Kong and there are so many tasty dishes I could recommend. But to this day one of my Hong Kong highlights has got to be a simple yet amazingly tasty dish of fried rice.
And when you only pay a few dollars for an entire meal, you can’t beat it!
Temple Street Night Market
Located in the middle of Kowloon, packed with bright lights and store owners competing for your attention, these night markets are worth a visit. You could pick up almost anything at these markets, from tacky souvenirs to colored wigs and counterfeit watches.
You can even get your fortune told. Even if you are not looking for anything its worth a trip just to immerse yourself in the craziness of it all.
Catch the Star Ferry
The Star ferry has been transporting locals and tourists between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon for centuries. Buy yourself an upper deck ticket, sit back and take in the sights and smells of this fantastic harbor.
From traditional fishing boats bobbing by or the flashy businessman sitting next to you, the Star Ferry is one of the best ways to see the differences between the generations and class hierarchies in Hong Kong.
Take a night stroll down Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade
This is one of my favorite things to do in Hong Kong as the view is stunning.
If you head out for a walk then go around 8 pm after catching a bite to eat from a local vendor. This means you can catch “A Symphony of lights”, the largest permanent light and sound show in the world. Totally beats Las Vegas!
Nan Lian Garden
This is one of the most beautiful places in Hong Kong and very relaxing away from the outside hustle and bustle.
Take your time after spending a hectic day on the streets of Hong Kong to escape it all. You will see all sorts of water features, oriental timber buildings and ornamental trees.
Visit a Tea house
It is one of those traditional experiences you have to do.
Ming Cha Tea House is one of the most well known and lots of travellers do head there. But there are other more traditional tea houses such as Lin Heung, which provides a place for locals to relax away from it all.
Day trip to Sai Kung
Sai Kung is a small traditional fishing village about half an hour outside of Hong Kong. It is is the perfect place to go if you feel like getting out of the city and seeing a bit of the countryside.
Picturesque mountain views, beautiful beaches and scrumptious seafood. What more could you want!
Hong Kong Museum of History
Hong Kong is not all about food, local markets and following the tourist trail. Over the years it has had a few rough patches and the Hong Kong Museum of History gives a fantastic account of its past.
Visit the Big Buddha
This 34-meter-high bronze Buddha will take your breath away. Situated within the walls of the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island, the surrounding scenery is almost as impressive as the Buddha itself.
While it can be a bit of a hike, you will want to stretch your legs after all the fried rice and dim sum.
